What are digital badges? A South African guide

Digital badges in plain English
A digital badge is a verifiable electronic credential. Unlike a static PDF certificate, a modern badge (Open Badges 2.0/3.0) carries metadata: who issued it, what criteria were met, which skills were demonstrated, and when it was awarded.
Why South Africa is paying attention
UJ has rolled out digital badges linked to curricular qualifications with LinkedIn verification. STADIO’s Stripes programme recognises skills beyond the transcript. UP uses competency badges in teacher education. Meanwhile SAQA and PoMiSA discussions around microcredentials create policy space for stackable, quality-assured short learning.
Badges vs certificates vs microcredentials
| Format | Verifiable metadata | Portable | Stackable pathway |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF certificate | Rarely | Weak | Informal |
| Digital badge (Open Badges) | Yes | Strong | Yes |
| Microcredential | Often badge-backed | Strong | Designed for stacking |
What employers should do
Ask candidates to share a verification URL. Check issuer identity, issue date, revocation status, and criteria. Prefer Open Badges 3.0 / W3C VC aligned credentials where possible.
